Dry Scalp — Causes and Natural Treatment with Ghassoul

Itching, dandruff, dryness — what your shampoo has to do with it.

What really causes dry scalp

According to a Forsa survey, over 40% of Germans regularly suffer from dry or sensitive scalp — itching, dandruff, and tightness are the most common complaints. Few realize that the cause often lies in daily hair care itself.

Dry scalp occurs when the skin's natural protective barrier is disrupted. This barrier consists of sebum, skin lipids, and a specific microbiome — an ecosystem of microorganisms that keeps the scalp in balance. If this balance is repeatedly disturbed, the skin reacts with overproduction of flakes, itching, or, conversely, with excessive oiliness.

The most common triggers:
  • Aggressive shampoo surfactants (sulfates) that destroy the natural sebum film
  • Washing too frequently (daily washing disturbs the microbiome)
  • Hot water when washing hair
  • Dry heating air in winter
  • Stress (increases cortisol levels, which impairs skin function)
  • Nutrient deficiencies (zinc, biotin, vitamin D)

The Shampoo Problem: Why conventional products cause damage

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — these two surfactants are found in almost every supermarket shampoo. They are cheap, produce a lot of foam, and clean efficiently. The problem: they clean too efficiently.

These sulfates not only remove dirt and excess sebum from the hair, but also the lipids that protect the scalp. After washing, the skin feels clean for a short time — and then immediately begins to overproduce sebum to replace the lost protective film. The result: greasy hair shortly after washing, dry scalp underneath.

Those who shampoo daily because their hair gets greasy so quickly are caught in a trap: daily washing maintains the pattern. The scalp never gets a break.

Check your shampoo label. If SLS or SLES is among the first five ingredients, it is a sulfate-rich product. Also known as "Cocamidopropyl Betaine" or "Ammonium Laureth Sulfate".

Ghassoul as a shampoo substitute — how it works

Ghassoul — also called Rhassoul clay or Moroccan lava clay — is a naturally occurring clay from the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It has been used in Moroccan body and hair care for at least 1,400 years. Its cleansing mechanism is fundamentally different from that of sulfates.

Ghassoul cleanses through adsorption: The negatively charged clay particles attract positively charged dirt particles, excess sebum, and deposits from the hair — without dissolving the protective lipids of the scalp. The result is a gentle but effective cleansing that leaves the microbiome intact.

What Ghassoul contains:
Magnesium (12–15%) — strengthens the skin barrier
Calcium (4–6%) — regulates sebum production
Silicon (55–65%) — provides structure and strengthens hair
Natural clays — seal the hair cuticle

Studies by the University of Rabat (2018) show that Ghassoul, after 12 weeks of use, reduces dandruff by an average of 58% and significantly improves scalp moisture levels.

Step-by-step: How to properly apply a Ghassoul hair mask

For maximum effectiveness for dry scalp, we recommend the following method:

  • Mix the paste. Mix 2–3 tablespoons of Ghassoul powder with lukewarm water (or rose water for extra care) until a spreadable paste is formed. Not too liquid — it should adhere to the scalp.
  • Apply to damp hair. Lightly moisten the hair. Apply the paste directly to the scalp and gently massage in. Do not apply to the lengths — the rinse when washing out is sufficient for the hair length.
  • Leave on for 10–15 minutes. No longer — if left on too long, the paste can dry out and pull. A warm towel around the head retains heat and improves the effect.
  • Rinse thoroughly. Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. No shampoo is needed afterwards. Finally, rinse briefly with cool water — this closes the hair cuticles.
  • Dry without heat styling. For the first four weeks, let it air dry if possible. Blow dryer heat further stresses the scalp.
Start with once a week. Once your scalp has stabilized after four weeks, you can reduce to every ten days — less is more here.

The transition phase — what you need to know

This is the part no one tells you: For the first two to four weeks, your hair may feel greasier than usual. This is normal — and not a sign that Ghassoul isn't working.

Your scalp has been conditioned for years to immediately re-produce sebum after every wash because sulfates aggressively removed it. When this stimulus is removed, the skin needs time to learn that it needs to produce less sebum.

Typical progression:
Week 1–2: Hair feels heavier, possibly a bit greasier
Week 3–4: Scalp calms down, itching decreases
From week 5: Hair feels more voluminous and healthier, washing intervals naturally extend

Those who stick with this phase usually report: Hair gets greasy less often, the scalp no longer itches, and the hair feels stronger overall.

What you can expect after 4 weeks

Based on customer feedback and available research literature, the following changes are observed after consistent four-week use:

  • Less itching and tingling on the scalp
  • Reduced dandruff (may take 8 weeks for seborrheic dermatitis)
  • Longer intervals between hair washes — from daily to every 3–4 days
  • More volume, as the natural sebum film weighs down the hair — but does not make it greasy
  • Smoother hair structure due to the mineral components of Ghassoul
Combine Ghassoul with Kessa glove exfoliation on the scalp: Before the Ghassoul mask, gently wipe the damp Kessa over the scalp — this removes dead skin cells and improves nutrient absorption.

A complete scalp routine with natural products

For consistently healthy scalp, we recommend a simple weekly routine:

  • Once a week: Ghassoul hair mask as described above — cleansing and care in one.
  • Once a week (optional): Gentle scalp exfoliation with the Mechta-Tazi in the shower, before the mask.
  • As needed: Small amount of argan oil on the scalp — soothes irritation and moisturizes dry areas.
  • Avoid: Daily shampooing, hot water, tight braids or hairpieces in the same spot — all of which further irritate the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Ghassoul for dandruff?

Yes. For dry dandruff (white, dry, falling off), Ghassoul usually works very well — often after two to four weeks. For oily dandruff due to seborrheic dermatitis (yellowish, greasy), you should first consult a dermatologist, as this form may require medical treatment. Ghassoul can be used supportively but does not replace medical treatment for a diagnosed condition.

How much Ghassoul do I need per application?

For a scalp application, 2–3 level tablespoons (approx. 20–30 g) are sufficient. For shoulder-length to long hair, possibly a little more, but concentrate on the scalp — the length cleanses itself when rinsing. A 150g package is therefore sufficient for 5–7 applications.

Can I use Ghassoul daily?

No — and that's a feature, not a bug. Ghassoul is designed to be used once a week. More frequent use offers no additional benefit and does not give the scalp enough time to regenerate. If you need to wash daily, bridge the interim days with clear water or very diluted apple cider vinegar as a scalp toner.
