Aker Fassi & Ghassoul Mask — The Moroccan DIY Cleansing Mask for Clear Skin
A recipe straight from the hammam: two powders from Fes and the Atlas, supplemented with oats and natural yogurt — for deep pore cleansing without a single chemical add-on.
In the Moroccan hammam, a single product is rarely used — instead, for generations, women have mixed what the souk offers into a mask tailored precisely to their skin. Two essential components of this tradition are Aker Fassi, the red beauty powder made from poppy and pomegranate peel from Fes, and Ghassoul, the mineral-rich rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains. Combined with oats for gentle exfoliation and natural yogurt for lactic acid care, this mask clarifies pores, absorbs excess sebum, and gives the skin an even, radiant complexion — entirely without synthetic additives.

For one application (face, possibly neck and décolletage):
Optional: 1–2 tsp rose water, if the paste becomes too thick
Briefly grind the oats in a coffee or spice grinder. This way, the oats blend more smoothly with the powders, and the mask is easier to wash off later.
Step-by-step instructions
Mix powders Mix Ghassoul, Aker Fassi, and the ground oats in a glass or ceramic bowl. Do not use metal — Ghassoul reacts with metal ions and loses effectiveness, an old hammam principle that still holds true today.
Stir in yogurt Stir in the natural yogurt spoon by spoon until a smooth, spreadable paste forms — similar to the consistency of cream cheese. If it remains too thick, add rose water drop by drop.
Apply to cleansed skin Apply the mask evenly to cleansed face with your fingers or a brush. Avoid the eye area and lips.
Leave on for 10–15 minutes Do not leave on for longer — otherwise, Ghassoul will start to dry too much and can make the skin feel tight, especially for dry or sensitive skin.
Rinse with lukewarm water Rinse with gentle, circular movements — this also provides a light exfoliation from the fine oat particles. Afterwards, gently pat the skin dry, do not rub.
Application Tips
Use 2x per week — for very dry skin, 1x is sufficient
Always mix fresh and use within a few minutes, the mask is not storable
After rinsing, apply a nourishing moisturizer or a few drops of oil, as Ghassoul also removes some moisture from the skin
For impure, oily skin: use slightly more Ghassoul, slightly less yogurt
For sensitive, dry skin: slightly increase the yogurt content and reduce Aker Fassi
Before the first application, do a patch test on your forearm and wait 24 hours — this applies to any new natural cosmetic mixture, even if all ingredients are purely plant-based or natural.
Combine the mask with a Kessa exfoliation before application — the skin will be particularly receptive, and the minerals from the Ghassoul will work deeper.
