What pH value really means
Human skin is naturally slightly acidic — its pH value in healthy adults is between 4.5 and 5.5. This is not a random number. This weak acidity is the result of a highly precise biological balance of sebum, sweat, lactic acid, free fatty acids, and the skin's metabolism itself.
For comparison: The pH scale ranges from 0 (highly acidic) to 14 (highly alkaline). A value of 7 is considered neutral — pure water. Healthy skin is significantly below this, in the slightly acidic range. Baby skin is almost neutral shortly after birth (pH ~7) and only develops the acidic protective film in the first few weeks of life. In old age, the skin's pH rises again and the barrier function diminishes — it's no coincidence that mature skin becomes drier and more sensitive.
Why is this relevant? Because every product you apply to your skin interacts with this balance. Some products disturb it briefly — and the skin compensates. Other products, especially with daily use, permanently shift the pH in a direction that causes problems.
The Acid Mantle — Your Invisible Skin Barrier
Directly on the skin's surface lies a thin, barely perceptible film: the acid mantle. Dermatologically speaking, it is the body's first active line of defense against the outside world. It consists of a mixture of sebum, sweat, dead skin cells, and the metabolic products of the skin microbiota — that is, the bacteria that live on your skin and perform important functions there.
What this mantle specifically does:
- Antimicrobial effect: The acidic environment inhibits the growth of pathogenic germs such as Staphylococcus aureus, the main cause of acne and infections.
- Moisture regulation: It slows down transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — the uncontrolled evaporation of water through the skin.
- Enzymatic control: Certain enzymes responsible for healthy skin cell turnover only work correctly in a slightly acidic environment. If the pH is too high, the wrong enzymes are activated and the exfoliation balance is disrupted.
- Microbiome balance: Beneficial bacterial strains like Lactobacillus thrive in an acidic environment. If the pH rises, opportunistic germs displace the protective bacteria.

The acid mantle is not static. It regenerates after every disturbance — but this regeneration takes time and resources. How much leeway the skin has depends on factors such as genetics, age, diet, and, above all, the products that affect it daily.
How conventional soap destroys the pH value
Commercial bar soap has a pH value between 9 and 10. This is non-negotiable — it is the chemical nature of the saponification process. When you wash with it, the skin's pH immediately rises to over 7, sometimes up to 8 or 9. Studies show that it takes healthy adults about 1 to 3 hours for the skin to return to its natural value. With twice-daily use, this recovery is never fully completed.
Liquid shower gels and syndet products (synthetic detergents) are usually more pH-neutral and thus less aggressive — but many contain sulfates like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which dissolve the lipid structure of the stratum corneum and severely disturb the skin microbiome. The result is similar to alkaline soap: a weakened barrier that can no longer prevent moisture loss.
Particularly problematic: facial soaps and cleansing foams. The face naturally has a lower pH than the rest of the body — around 4.7 to 5.0. It is therefore particularly sensitive to alkaline products. Those who still start every morning with an alkaline cleanser literally train their skin to overproduce sebum — the body tries to rebuild the mantle as quickly as possible.
pH Imbalance and its Consequences for the Skin
A persistently elevated skin pH is not an abstract chemical quantity — it manifests itself in specific skin problems. Several clinical studies in recent years have systematically investigated the connection between pH value and various skin diseases.
- Acne: The acne-causing bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes) is a natural inhabitant of the skin, but it multiplies uncontrollably in a more alkaline pH environment. Skincare products that shift the pH towards 6 or 7 promote outbreaks — even if they do not contain aggressive ingredients.
- Atopic dermatitis and eczema: Atopic dermatitis patients have measurably higher pH values in the affected skin area than healthy control subjects. This higher pH activates serine proteases — enzymes that further break down the skin barrier and trigger a vicious cycle of inflammation, itching, and barrier weakness.
- Dry and flaky skin: The enzymes that produce moisture-binding substances in the skin (filaggrin breakdown products such as pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and urocanic acid) are pH-dependent. If the pH is too high, they do not work efficiently — the skin loses its natural water-binding capacity.
- Sensitive skin: Those who constantly have slightly reddened, reactive skin often suffer from a chronic pH imbalance, not an oversensitivity to certain ingredients.
The good news: a balanced pH value is not a genetic lottery. It can be actively supported by the right care.
Moroccan Natural Cosmetics and pH Protection
Traditional Moroccan beauty care was never based on chemical formulas — yet much of what has been practiced in the hammam for centuries is biochemically sound. Two products are at the center of pH-protective cleansing: Beldi soap and Ghassoul.
Beldi Soap — soft deep cleansing with Moroccan tradition
Beldi soap is a black, soft paste made from olive oil and potassium lye (potash from plant ash). Unlike sodium soaps, which are saponified with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and result in a solid, highly alkaline soap, potassium saponification produces a softer paste with a milder profile. Potassium soaps tend to rinse off faster and leave less residue on the skin.
However, another factor is crucial: Beldi soap is traditionally not used daily as a cleansing soap, but as a pre-treatment in the hammam. The paste is applied to damp skin, left on for a few minutes, and then rubbed off with a Kessa glove. The exposure time is short, rinsing is thorough — the alkaline contact with the skin is limited in time. This significantly minimizes pH disturbance compared to daily washing with conventional soap.
In addition: Olive oil contains oleic acid, which is structurally similar to natural skin lipids. After rinsing, a light lipid film remains on the skin, which supports the barrier instead of depleting it.
Ghassoul — pH-gentle deep cleansing with volcanic mineral
Ghassoul (also Rassoul) is a rare volcanic clay that is exclusively mined in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. Its cleansing effect is not based on surfactants, but on adsorption: due to its strong negative charge and porous structure, it attracts and binds dirt particles, excess sebum, and dead skin cells without attacking the skin's lipids.
The pH value of Ghassoul, depending on the water ratio, is between 7.5 and 8 — significantly more alkaline than skin, but much milder than conventional soap. And because Ghassoul contains no aggressive surfactants, the barrier is much less disturbed after use. Many people with sensitive skin report that Ghassoul is the only cleansing product after which their skin does not feel tight or dry.
Rose water as a pH tonic
Rose water is not a luxurious extra — it is one of the most effective and inexpensive means of pH care. With a pH value of about 4.9 to 5.2, it almost corresponds to the natural skin pH. Sprayed on or applied with a cotton pad after every cleansing, it actively helps the skin to restore the acid mantle faster.
It works not through chemical intervention, but by providing the right environment. At the same time, rose water provides phenylethyl alcohol — a compound with a slightly antimicrobial effect that stabilizes the skin microbiome without attacking beneficial bacteria.
Building a pH-Friendly Skincare Routine
A good pH routine doesn't have to be complicated. It follows a simple principle: as little pH disturbance as possible, as much barrier support as necessary.

Minimize morning cleansing. For most skin types, lukewarm water is sufficient in the morning. Overnight, the skin hasn't built up a layer of dirt — a cleansing product is unnecessary and only disturbs the acid mantle that the skin has just freshly built up. If you still want to cleanse: Ghassoul as a gel mixture is the gentlest option.

Restore pH balance after cleansing. After every cleansing — morning or evening — spray rose water on your face or pat it on with your hands. Do not rinse. Let it work for 30 seconds, then seal with moisturizer.

Hammam ritual once a week. Apply Beldi soap to damp skin, let it work for 2 to 3 minutes. Then rub it off with a Kessa glove in circular motions — from shoulders to legs. Rinse thoroughly, then generously apply a body oil while the skin is still slightly damp.

Check products. Pay attention to pH information when buying cleansers, serums, and masks. Many brands now state the pH value. If it is above 7, caution is advised — especially for daily use.

Don't forget internal care. Skin pH is also influenced from within. A diet rich in Omega-3 (flaxseed, fatty fish, walnuts), sufficient water, and reduced sugar promote a healthy lipid structure — and thus the skin's natural acid production.

Can I measure my skin's pH myself?
Yes — with pH test strips, which you can buy in pharmacies or online. Cleanse your skin, wait 30 minutes (to allow the pH to normalize after cleansing), then gently press a damp test strip onto your cheek or forearm. The color comparison will give you an approximate value. More accurate results are provided by special skin analysis devices with digital displays used in beauty salons. A value between 4.5 and 5.5 is considered ideal. If your value is regularly above 6, you should critically review your cleansing and care products.
Is Ghassoul really better than regular soap for sensitive skin?
For most people with sensitive or breakout-prone skin: yes. The crucial difference is not just in the pH value (Ghassoul is around 7.5–8 compared to 9–10 for bar soap), but primarily in the fact that Ghassoul contains no surfactants. Surfactants dissolve lipids — they literally separate the fat molecules from the cell structure of the stratum corneum. Ghassoul cleanses by adsorption: dirt particles adhere to the charged clay surface and are removed when rinsed off. The skin lipids remain largely intact. The result: less tightness, faster barrier recovery, more stable microbiome.
Why isn't my skin improving despite expensive skincare products?
The most common overlooked problem: the cleansing step. Many people invest in high-quality serums and creams, but cleanse daily with alkaline products that destroy the acid mantle — thereby negating most of the benefits of subsequent care. Active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or peptides work better in a slightly acidic environment. If the pH is too high after cleansing, these substances can be absorbed less effectively into the skin and unleash their full potential. First, check your cleanser — that is often the easiest and most effective step.
