Skincare in German Winter — Rescuing Skin from Cold, Heating Air, and Dryness

From October to March: How to get your skin through the German winter.

The Three Main Enemies of Your Winter Skin in Germany

In Germany, indoor relative humidity drops to an average of 30–40% during the heating season — and even below 25% in particularly dry homes. That's less than in many desert regions. As a result, your skin loses moisture significantly faster than it can absorb it.

Three factors systematically work against your skin from October to March:

1. Heating Air — extracts moisture from the indoor air; the skin loses water through evaporation without being able to replace it.

2. Cold Outside — frost and wind weaken the sebaceous glands; the skin's natural protective barrier breaks down more easily.

3. Frequent Hand Washing — soap and warm water dissolve the skin's natural protective film, especially during the German winter months.

The result: tight feeling, redness, flaky patches, chapped lips and hands — complaints almost everyone in Germany experiences, but most don't treat correctly.

What Heating Air Really Does to Your Skin

Central heating is the invisible skin enemy number one in German households. When it's 2°C outside and 22°C inside, relative humidity drops to levels where wood starts to crack. The skin constantly evaporates water without getting enough replacement.

It first reacts with increased sebum production — a natural attempt to repair the barrier. If this fails, fine cracks form in the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer). Through these cracks, the skin loses even more moisture, and at the same time, irritants can penetrate more easily. This cycle is why winter skin in Germany often remains persistently dry.

Place a glass of water on the heater in winter or use a humidifier — this is also skincare. The goal is an indoor humidity of 50–60%.

For the skin directly, this means: pure moisture alone is not enough in the German winter. You need a combination of moisturizing and occlusive ingredients — this is where plant oils and traditional Moroccan ingredients come in.

Cold and the Breakdown of the Skin Barrier

Below 8°C, sebaceous glands slow their production by up to 30%. Sebum is the skin's natural protective film — a thin mixture of fats, waxes, and proteins. Without it, the skin is defenseless against wind, cold, and irritants.

In Germany, the commute to work in the morning is particularly problematic: cold shock on the street, then overheated subway or office, then cold again. This change puts enormous strain on the skin. Blood vessels rapidly dilate and constrict; in the long run, redness and couperose develop, especially on the face.

What really helps: A rich cream with natural oils that supplement the skin's protective film. Ghassoul (Moroccan lava clay) cleanses gently without stripping the protective film and leaves a thin mineral protective layer on the skin.

Proper Cleansing in Winter

The most common mistake in winter skincare: overly aggressive cleansing. Regular shower gel or soap with a pH value above 7 destroys the skin's acid mantle. In summer, this regenerates relatively quickly. In winter, with dry heating air and cold, the skin often remains permanently stressed afterward.

  • Use lukewarm instead of hot water — hot water dissolves the skin's protective lipids.
  • Limit shower time to 5–7 minutes — less time in water means less moisture loss.
  • Dry yourself gently and pat instead of rubbing — the skin is particularly sensitive after showering.
  • Moisturize within 3 minutes after showering — the skin is still slightly damp and absorbs products better.
  • Replace regular soap with Beldi soap — it cleanses gently and contains olive oil, which does not dry out the skin.

Beldi soap, the traditional Moroccan black soap made from olive oil and potassium hydroxide, has a pH of about 8 — similar to mild syndets, but with a natural oil content that protects the skin during cleansing instead of degreasing it.

Moroccan Winter Skincare: What Works

In Morocco, two climatic extremes are known: bitter cold in the Atlas Mountains (temperatures below -10°C in Ifrane) and extreme dryness in desert regions. Traditional skincare practices have been developed over centuries for exactly these conditions — and they work wonderfully even in the German winter.

The Hammam ritual originated from the necessity to regularly renew dry, cold-stressed skin. The core elements:

Ghassoul (Lava Clay): Absorbent clay minerals from the Atlas Mountains that cleanse the skin without stripping fats. Ideal as a face mask in winter — no shampoo needed that dries out the scalp.

Kessa Exfoliation: The Moroccan exfoliating glove mechanically removes dead skin cells. In winter, they accumulate more because the skin regenerates more slowly. Once a week, it allows products to penetrate deeper.

Beldi Soap: Softens the skin and prepares it for exfoliation. The olive oil content partially remains on the skin after rinsing.

What is often underestimated in Germany: the Hammam principle is not a luxury, but an efficient maintenance routine for the skin. 20 minutes once a week — and winter skin recovers significantly better than with daily application of body lotion on unprepared, calloused skin.

Always exfoliate after showering or bathing when the skin is softened. Dry exfoliation does more harm than good.

The 4-Step Winter Routine for Germany

This routine is designed for the specific conditions in Germany: heating air, short days, cold mornings, and the stress of daily temperature changes.

  • Cleanse with Beldi Soap (daily): Use lukewarm water, work in Beldi soap and gently massage. The olive oil in the soap protects the skin during cleansing.
  • Weekly Exfoliation with Kessa (1x per week): After 5 minutes of warm water, rub the skin with the Kessa glove in long, even strokes. You'll see what rolls off — those are dead skin cells that have blocked skincare.
  • Ghassoul Mask (1–2x per week): For the face, mix Ghassoul with water to form a paste, leave on for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. The minerals regulate sebum and smooth the skin surface.
  • Moisturize immediately after showering: Apply a richer cream within 3 minutes after showering. In winter, a light lotion is often not enough — choose something with shea butter or argan oil as a base.

This routine doesn't take more time in everyday life than what you already do — but it makes the difference between skin that survives the German winter and skin that succumbs to it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Winter Skincare

Why is my skin so much drier in German winter than in summer?

In Germany, indoor relative humidity often drops to 30% or less during the heating season. The skin constantly evaporates water into the dry air. At the same time, cold slows down sebum production — the skin's natural protective film becomes thinner. Both effects combined explain why winter skin in Germany remains persistently dry.

Can I use Beldi soap daily on my face?

Yes, if your skin is not extremely sensitive. Beldi soap is significantly milder than regular soap, as the olive oil content protects the skin during cleansing. Start with 3–4 times a week and observe how your skin reacts. For very sensitive skin, we recommend diluting the soap or using it only every other day.

How often should I exfoliate in winter?

Once a week is sufficient in most cases. In winter, the skin renews itself more slowly than in summer, so dead cells accumulate more — but more than once a week can irritate the skin, especially if it is already dry. Always exfoliate after showering and moisturize immediately afterward.
