The most common mistake right after
The typical mistake after Kessa exfoliation: immediately following up with a rich cream or a heavily fragranced product because the skin feels "needy." This is usually too much, too soon. Rich creams with many ingredients, fragrances, active ingredients like acids or retinoids—all of these affect freshly exfoliated skin much more intensely than skin with an intact outer layer.
Many people know the result: instead of the hoped-for extra dose of care, a slight burning sensation, redness, or tightness occurs—and the actually positive exfoliating experience ends with irritated skin. The better way is an intermediate step that soothes the skin before the actual care follows.
Why rose water, of all things
Rose water traditionally serves precisely this function in the Moroccan Hammam ritual: the finish after intense cleansing. It is obtained by distilling rose petals, is mild, uncomplicated in its composition, and has a cooling and soothing effect on the skin—without the active ingredients or fragrance complexes that could overwhelm freshly exfoliated skin.
The effect is doubly useful: rose water immediately returns some moisture to the skin that was lost due to exfoliation and prior water exposure in the Hammam or shower. And it bridges precisely the period when the skin is still too sensitive for richer products but already needs attention.
The correct order after exfoliation
Rinse off exfoliant thoroughly Lukewarm water, no hot shower immediately afterwards—hot water irritates freshly exfoliated skin even more.
Gently pat skin dry, don't rub A soft towel, lightly pressing instead of rubbing.
Spray rose water or apply with a cotton pad Generously over the entire face or treated body area, let it absorb briefly.
Only then proceed with actual care When the skin feels calm again—usually after a few minutes.
If you do the Kessa exfoliation in the evening, you can also use rose water as the last step before bed—the skin regenerates at night and benefits from the additional moisture.
What should wait
Immediately after Kessa exfoliation, some things are better postponed until the skin has calmed down:
Heavily fragranced creams or oils — the risk of irritation is significantly higher on freshly exfoliated skin.
Direct sun exposure — the new layer of skin is more photosensitive, sun protection is particularly important afterwards.
Further mechanical cleansing — no second exfoliation, no brush, no exfoliating gloves on the same day.
