The result was a dual treatment, prepared before every trip to the hammam and passed down from mother to daughter for generations.
Henna coats every single hair like a fine film, filling in small irregularities in the hair structure and making the hair feel noticeably thicker and more resilient — entirely without chemical additives. Ghassoul takes on the role of cleansing: the volcanic mineral clay gently removes excess sebum and residue without drying out the scalp like a sulfate shampoo. Together with nourishing yogurt and argan oil, it creates a mask that strengthens, cleanses, and softens simultaneously.
Why this combination works: Henna and Ghassoul complement each other perfectly because they serve two different functions — strengthening and cleansing — rather than overlapping. The yogurt provides mild lactic acid that gently exfoliates the scalp and smooths the cuticle, while argan oil balances out the typical dryness that pure henna treatments sometimes leave behind. This leaves the hair not only stronger after rinsing, but also soft and manageable.
Ingredients
For one application (shoulder-length to medium-length hair):
3 tablespoons EVARGANA Henna Powder
2 tablespoons EVARGANA Ghassoul Powder
150 g (1 cup) plain yogurt (for a purely plant-based version: warm water instead of yogurt)
1 egg yolk — optional, for extra strengthening; simply omit for a vegan version
1–2 tablespoons Argan oil
A glass or ceramic bowl and a wooden spoon — no metal, as it reacts with both the henna and the minerals in the Ghassoul
Shower cap or an old towel that you don't mind getting stained
Step-by-step instructions
Mix dry: Thoroughly blend the henna and Ghassoul powders together in the bowl until no lumps remain.
Stir in yogurt: Slowly add the yogurt (or warm water) a spoonful at a time, stirring until a smooth, creamy paste forms without any lumps — the consistency should resemble thick pudding.
Incorporate egg yolk & argan oil: Stir in the egg yolk and argan oil until the mixture has a uniform sheen.
Let it rest: Cover the paste and let it sit for 15–20 minutes. During this time, the henna pigments are released and the mask unfolds its full effect.
Apply: Apply to dry or slightly dampened hair — starting at the scalp, then distributing evenly through the lengths and ends. It is best to wear gloves to prevent your hands from being stained.
Leave on: Tie your hair up, cover with a shower cap or towel, and let it work for 1–2 hours — the longer it stays on, the more intensive the strengthening effect.
Rinse thoroughly: Wash out with plenty of lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Ghassoul does not foam like shampoo — this is normal. If necessary, follow up with a mild, natural conditioner.
Always test a strand before the first application: natural henna can give light, grey, or bleached hair a warm, reddish-gold shimmer. For dark hair, the effect is usually barely visible and primarily provides strengthening.
Application tips
Frequency: Every 3–4 weeks for noticeably stronger hair without overloading the scalp
Dry hair: Slightly increase the amount of yogurt and be more generous with the argan oil
Oily scalp: Slightly increase the proportion of Ghassoul and omit the egg yolk
Avoid color shimmer: If you don't want the reddish tint, use neutral henna (Cassia) instead of classic henna powder
Storage: Do not store mixed paste — mix fresh for each application, as henna loses its effectiveness
For extra shine after rinsing, spray the lengths with a splash of rose water and let them air dry.
