Why Lips Need Special Care
Lip skin is three times thinner than normal facial skin and has no sebaceous glands — meaning it cannot supply itself with fat. Cold, wind, sun, and mouth breathing dehydrate it faster than any other part of the body.
Conventional lip balms often create a short-term barrier, but no real care. Many contain mineral oils or petroleum jelly, which seal but tend to make the lip skin sluggish over time — self-regulation decreases, and dependence on the balm increases.
What is Aker Fassi?
Aker Fassi is a traditional Moroccan beauty powder made from dried pomegranate rinds and poppy petals. For centuries, it has been used in Morocco as a natural lipstick and blush — especially in Fes and Marrakech, it is an integral part of the beauty routine.
The powder combines two effects: it colors and it cares. The natural shade ranges from delicate pink to deep burgundy, depending on the amount applied and skin tone. At the same time, the polyphenols in the pomegranate peel provide antioxidant protection, and the tannins have a slightly astringent effect that tightens the lips.
- Natural Pigment: Warming pink to burgundy, without dyes
- Antioxidant: Polyphenols from pomegranate peels protect lip skin
- Free from mineral oils, silicones, and synthetic additives
- Combinable: With rosewater, argan oil, or shea butter for various consistencies
Rosewater for Lips — More Than a Scented Water
True rosewater — obtained by steam distillation from Damask roses — contains phenylethanol compounds that have mild anti-inflammatory and slightly antiseptic effects. This is noticeable on chapped or irritated lips: rosewater soothes instead of just moisturizing.
In the lip care routine, rosewater functions as a preparation and a mixing medium. You moisten your lips with it before applying Aker Fassi — the powder adheres better and spreads more evenly on moistened skin. Rosewater is also ideal for gently removing Aker Fassi at the end of the day.
The Morning Lip Care Routine
-
Gently prepare lips
Moisten a cotton pad with rosewater and gently dab it over your lips. This removes any overnight care residue and prepares the lips for Aker Fassi. No rubbing — just dabbing. -
Mix Aker Fassi
Put a small pinch of Aker Fassi into a clean bowl. Add 2–3 drops of rosewater and stir to form a homogeneous paste. For extra care: incorporate a drop of argan oil. -
Apply and distribute
Apply the paste with your finger or a lip brush — from the center outwards. Gently pat for a more natural finish instead of a sharp edge. -
Seal
Let the paste sit for 1–2 minutes. Then apply a very thin layer of argan oil. This sets the color and protects the lips from drying out all morning.

The Evening Lip Care Routine
At night, the skin regenerates most intensely. Lips particularly benefit from an evening deep care because there are no external stressors — no wind, no sun, no mouth breathing during conversation.
-
Remove Aker Fassi
Rosewater on a cotton pad — this completely and gently dissolves the powder. No aggressive wiping is necessary, which could irritate the lip skin. -
Evening Scrub (1–2× per week)
Mix half a teaspoon of brown sugar with a drop of argan oil. Gently massage the mixture onto the lips in circular motions for 20–30 seconds. Rinse with lukewarm water. No daily scrubbing — this weakens the lip skin. -
Apply Night Care
Apply argan oil or pure shea butter generously. Let it soak in overnight — in the morning, you'll have noticeably softer lips.
Natural Lip Scrub
Flaky lips occur when dead skin cells are not shed. A gentle scrub accelerates this natural process — but harsh methods do more harm than good.
A Moroccan variant: Mix Tebrima exfoliating powder with a drop of rosewater. The fine fruit kernel powder is gentler than salt or coarse sugar particles — ideal for sensitive lip skin.
Important: Never exfoliate lips more than twice a week. Over-exfoliating makes the already thin skin more sensitive and can lead to redness and inflammation.

Discover nowFrequently Asked Questions About Natural Lip Care
Does Aker Fassi last as long as regular lipstick?
Aker Fassi is less opaque than conventional lipsticks, but more durable than many liquid lip care products. Its longevity can be significantly improved by sealing the paste with a thin layer of argan oil after application. Simply reapply briefly after eating — this is normal for natural products.
Can I use Aker Fassi on my cheeks too?
Yes — Aker Fassi is traditionally also used as a natural blush. Apply a very small amount to the cheekbones with a soft brush. The effect is a vibrant, natural pink that suits all skin tones.
My lips are very dry and chapped — where do I start?
First, identify the cause: dehydration, cold, vitamin B deficiency, or mouth breathing are common triggers. For short-term relief, pure argan oil applied several times a day helps. Avoid exfoliation in the first week — only exfoliate once the skin is no longer sore. You can reapply Aker Fassi after 2–3 days, as the pomegranate polyphenols have a mild anti-inflammatory effect.
