The perfect evening routine for glowing skin — 5 steps that work overnight

While you sleep, your skin regenerates — here's how to make the most of it.

Why at night? The biology of skin regeneration

Between 10 PM and 2 AM, your skin produces up to three times more growth hormones than during the day — a fact clearly demonstrated by dermatology research from the University of Münster. This hormone peak controls cell renewal, repairs DNA damage caused by UV radiation, and builds new collagen fibers. So, the night is not a break for your skin, but its most productive shift.

This means that what you apply in the evening doesn't just work superficially — it meets skin that is actively absorbing and processing nutrients. A good evening routine is therefore not just a routine, but a targeted investment in your skin's regenerative capacity.

The crucial difference to the morning routine: In the morning, you protect your skin from environmental influences (sun, dirt, stress). In the evening, you cleanse, nourish, and give it space for self-healing. Both phases are important — but the night is the more productive one.

Step 1: Double cleansing with Beldi soap

The evening begins with a complete cleanse — and "complete" means more than just washing once. Makeup, sunscreen, sebum, and fine dust accumulate in layers on your skin. Water alone isn't enough, and even many cleansing gels only scratch the surface.

Moroccan Beldi soap dissolves oil-soluble impurities like makeup and sunscreen. It contains olive oil and black olive extract, which cleanse and protect the skin barrier at the same time. Apply it to a dry or slightly damp face, massage for one minute, and then rinse with lukewarm water.

Then comes the second cleanse: a gentle step with warm water and a damp cloth removes any remaining residue. The result is truly clean skin — not irritated, not dried out, but ready for the next steps.

Never use hot water to cleanse. It permanently dilates blood vessels and dries out the skin. Lukewarm is the key — even in winter.

Step 2: Deep cleansing with Ghassoul mask (1–2 times a week)

Ghassoul — Arabic for "washing" — is a volcanic clay from the Moroccan Atlas Mountains and has been used in Hammam culture since the 12th century. Its special molecular structure has an exceptional adsorption capacity: it binds dirt, sebum, and dead cells without damaging the skin barrier.

For an evening mask, mix Ghassoul powder with lukewarm water or rose water to form a creamy paste. Apply it evenly, leave it on for 10–15 minutes, and rinse off before it is completely dry — a too-dry clay mask draws moisture from the skin. The result is refined pores, mattified skin, and significantly improved receptiveness for subsequent skincare steps.

For which skin type? Ghassoul works for all types. Oily skin benefits from 2 times a week, dry skin from 1 time — each followed by intensive moisturizing care.

Step 3: Gentle Kessa exfoliation (twice a week)

The Moroccan Kessa glove is not an ordinary exfoliating accessory. Its unique viscose structure mechanically removes dead skin cells — without chemical agents and without microplastics. Studies show that mechanical exfoliation twice a week measurably stimulates collagen production in the epidermis.

The right technique makes all the difference: Moisten the skin thoroughly (preferably after the Ghassoul mask), put on the Kessa glove, and massage in long, even strokes over the face and body — not circularly, but in one direction, from bottom to top. You will visibly see the detached skin cells. This is normal and shows how much dead material has accumulated.

After the Kessa exfoliation, the skin is optimally prepared: pores open, surface smoothed, blood circulation stimulated. The subsequent care applied penetrates twice as deeply.

Do not use Kessa exfoliation daily — 2 times a week is sufficient. Too frequent exfoliation weakens the protective barrier and can lead to redness.

Step 4: Toning and preparation

After cleansing, the skin's pH value is slightly out of balance — even with mild soap. An alcohol-free tonic or a rose water spray (warmed to 35–36°C) brings the acid mantle back to its optimal value of 4.5–5.5. At the same time, the tonic provides a light moisture base that anchors the subsequent oil or cream care.

Simplest method: two to three sprays of rose water on a damp face — do not rub off, pat into the skin. Then immediately continue with the nourishing care while the skin is still slightly damp. Moisture absorbs better than on dry skin.

Step 5: Nourishing care with Argan oil or natural butter cream

The last layer of the evening routine is the most important — it works all night long. While light, non-comedogenic formulas are preferred during the day (so that makeup adheres and pores don't clog), it can be richer in the evening.

Moroccan argan oil contains 80% mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as vitamin E. It corresponds to the skin's natural lipid film and penetrates within minutes without leaving a greasy residue. For very dry or irritated skin, a natural shea butter base mixed with a drop of argan oil is recommended.

Don't forget the face, neck, and décolleté — the neck, in particular, often ages faster because it is often overlooked in skincare routines. Massage the oil in upward strokes to support lymphatic drainage.

The layering principle: Always apply products from thin to thick. Water-based serums first, then oils, then heavy creams — this way, each layer penetrates optimally without blocking the next.

The right timing for each routine

A complete evening routine takes 15–20 minutes. That sounds like a lot, but most of it is waiting time — you don't have to stand there. Here's a realistic schedule:

  • 9:30 PM: Apply Beldi soap, massage for 1 minute, rinse off. Mix and apply Ghassoul mask.
  • 9:45 PM: Rinse off Ghassoul. On exfoliation days: Use Kessa glove (5 minutes).
  • 9:50 PM: Spray rose water tonic, let it absorb for 30 seconds.
  • 9:51 PM: Apply argan oil or night cream, massage.
  • 10:00 PM: Routine complete — skin now continues to work independently.
Schedule your Ghassoul mask evenings on days when you have a little more time — e.g., Wednesday and Saturday. This way, the routine becomes a fixed, pleasant structure instead of a burden.

Common mistakes in the evening routine

Many people diligently care for their skin — but incorrectly. These three mistakes sabotage even the best evening routine:

1. Cleansing too late: Those who only go to the bathroom after midnight miss out on the skin's most productive regeneration phase. Ideally, skincare should be completed before 10 PM.

2. Only water for makeup removal: Water does not emulsify oils. Those who only remove makeup with water sleep on a layer of pigments, preservatives, and sebum.

3. Applying skincare to dry skin: Moisturizer on completely dry skin works half as well as on slightly damp skin. The tonic or a spray before the cream makes a measurable difference.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Evening Routine

How long does it take to see results?

The first improvements — more even complexion, refined pores — usually appear after 2–3 weeks of consistent evening routine. Real deep effects such as improved texture and radiance take 4–6 weeks, as skin renewal occurs in this cycle. Be patient — sustainable care takes time, but lasts significantly longer.

Can I use the same routine for face and body?

Yes and no. Beldi soap and Kessa glove work excellently on the entire body — that is even their traditional area of use in the Hammam. Ghassoul is also suitable for body masks, especially on elbows and knees. However, facial skin is thinner and more sensitive; use gentler pressure on the face with the Kessa and let masks sit for a shorter time than on the body.

What to do if my skin reacts after exfoliation?

Slight redness immediately after Kessa exfoliation is normal — it disappears after 20–30 minutes. If the redness persists or a feeling of tightness occurs, you have applied too much pressure or exfoliated too often. Reduce to once a week and let the skin recover. For persistent reactions, we recommend consulting a dermatologist.
